MIT tested 1,000 Oreo cookies to crack the mystery of the best way to eat one

Have you ever argued with friends about the “right” way to eat an Oreo? Should you bite straight in, or twist it apart and lick the cream first? Turns out, researchers at MIT actually ran experiments with 1,000 Oreo cookies to find a scientific answer.

A Deliciously Serious Experiment

The MIT engineers built a special device called the Oreometer – designed to twist Oreos under controlled conditions and study how the cream splits between the two wafers. They tested cookies in all sorts of scenarios: different twist speeds, torque levels, even varying room temperatures.

The results?

  • In most cases, the cream sticks entirely to just one side.

  • Oreos don’t split as symmetrically as you might expect.

  • If you’re hoping for a perfect 50/50 cream split… sorry, it’s nearly impossible!

So, What’s the “Best” Way to Eat an Oreo?

According to the study, if you want the most balanced experience, the science says: eat the whole cookie together instead of twisting it apart. But for twist-and-lick fans, just know one side will always win the cream.

Science Meets Everyday Joy

This might sound a little silly, but that’s exactly the charm—science can sneak into the small joys of life, even how we eat a cookie. And while MIT’s Oreo research may not change the world, it certainly sparked curiosity (and probably some cravings).

👉 How about you—what’s your Oreo ritual? Do you bite, twist, dunk, or have your own unique method?
